He later made his film debut in How to Make an American Quilt (1995) and received first notable critical praise for his performance in Prefontaine (1997). Since the 2000s, Leto has been nominated for awards for his work in such films as American Psycho (2000), Highway (2002), Lord of War (2005), Lonely Hearts (2006), Chapter 27 (2007), and Mr. Nobody (2009). The band’s follow-up album, A Beautiful Lie (2005), went platinum in several countries. “My mom’s father was in the Air Force,” Leto explained, “so moving around a lot was a normal way of life.” His father remarried and died soon after. Leto wanted to help his family and became a dishwasher at small snack-bar at 12, and he was a doorman at 16. Leto later co-starred with Christina Ricci in The Last of the High Kings and appeared in Switchback. For the role, Leto immersed himself in the runner’s life, meeting with members of the family and Prefontaine’s friends.
